Hello all,

I'm aware of the mildew problem from the Tacoma A/C, but I think my '01
Tacoma Xtra Cab 4X4 has a different interior odor. I searched
Dejanews/Google for past posts and didn't find anything.

My friend has the same truck, but a 2000. His developed the odor after
about a year. The only way I can describe it is that it smells like
bearing grease. Sure enough, when mine was about a year old, it
developed the same problem. I don't think it's associated with the A/C
because I have a Nissan truck that has an A/C mildew problem and the
Tacoma's odor is totally different. Although I rarely use the A/C, I
did use it when the truck was brand new and I'd be surprised that if the
odor is from the A/C that it would have taken a year to become
noticeable. I'm thinking it's the upholstry or plastic that Toyota
used. I've never had the interior shampoo'ed or detailed, so it isn't a
cleaning product issue. It's a bummer because when ever someone gets in
my truck, they ask about the smell.

I can't believe my friend and I are the only two with this problem.
Anyone?

Thanks in advance,
Greg

Greg, I get it once in a while too. Changed my transmission gear oil (5
speed) and it went away. I really noticed it when I was towing my
enclosed 16 ft cargo trailer and mostly after using 3rd gear. Changed
the tranny oil and it was gone. I suspect it was whipping/foaming and
venting. But it wasnt leaking. Just venting. Is yours a 5 speed?

Yes, mine is a 5-speed, but my friend's is an automatic. I also forgot
to mention that I rarely drive it. I've had it for almost four years
and only have 13,000 miles on it. My old beater Nissan truck is more
comfortable and easier to drive around town. So, unfortunately, the
Tacoma just sits in my driveway. I try to drive it a couple of times a
month just to keep things working. That odor is always there.

Thanks.
